MGC Garden Tour 2022

ABOUT THE GARDENS AND THE NATIVE PLANT SALE:
​​At the ​Hyland/Wente property* on a 41 acre cornfield high above Sharon, the architect Larry Wente designed his ecologically conscious home with elegant perennial gardens that lead out from the house, along rills and pools. Stroll through the first floor of the house to see the flow of interior spaces with the long views of hills and farmland.

Historic Cobble Pond Farm* offers 20 acres of enchantingly landscaped gardens and lawns, with specimen trees, mature perennial beds, a variety of carefully maintained garden rooms, and a meadow of grazing Angus cattle. The original design, envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted’s landscape firm, has been faithfully maintained and enhanced by MGC member Kathy Metz.

Michael Trapp’s 1790’s farmhouse and gardens in the Oblong Valley, on the outskirts of Sharon, show off the style of this master interior and exterior designer who mixes “old with older”.  Stone terraces, pools, tall columnar evergreens, and a mix of garden elements are dramatic and unexpected.

Lisa Keyko’s intimate gardens have been designed and cared for by Lisa herself over the last 21 years. There is a classic boxwood quadrant garden off the screened porch, as well as mixed perennial beds and borders, mature trees, a peaceful pool area and a kitchen garden.

Sally Pettus, nationally recognized artist and MGC member, has created a personal and intimate in-town garden off the Sharon Green, offering secret spaces and an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, where Sally’s fantastic bronze sculptures reflect the natural world.

The Pollinator Garden at Sharon Audubon,** lovingly maintained by Millbrook Garden Club members for sixty years, is a formal garden planted for bees and butterflies. Don’t miss Audubon’s nearby butterfly tent and the live raptor aviaries.

2019 GARDEN TOUR
​MONDAY, JUNE 10th 2019 • 10am-4pm
Tour of five stunning Millbrook area-properties and Lunch at Mashomack Preserve Club 

The Gardens included in the tour:
 
1. Ginzan Farm. The broad landscape of organic farm and meadow at Ginzan Farm features garden borders around the home and pool, with breathtaking views of the Shekomeko valley beyond. The impressive vegetable garden boasts meticulously maintained raised beds that weave effortlessly into beautiful peripheral plantings. 
 
2. Brick House Farm. Originally constructed in 1760, Brick House Farm is a perfect retreat in bucolic horse country. After enjoying the gardens surrounding the house, visitors will be able to tour ground-floor rooms enhanced with beautiful floral arrangements by members of the MGC.
 
3. Petersen garden. Included in Jane Garmey’s book Private Gardens of the Hudson Valley, the Petersen garden, a horticultural jewel, is designed to have interest every month of the year.  The collection features  natives, native cultivars, rare exotics, and a spectacular meadow of Sporobolus heterolepsis.
 
4. Junto Farm. The remarkable 200-acre landscape of Junto Farm invites you into the gardens through a series of outdoor destinations, activities, and moods.  Along with a stunning sculpture collection, the gardens include a vegetable garden, woodland and stream garden, orchard, herb garden, lilac walk, and river garden.
 
5. Ridder/Pennoyer garden. The Ridder/Pennoyer garden dazzles and delights with an interior designer’s sense of color and pattern. Among the property’s highlights are a hornbeam-enclosed flower garden with formal bluestone paths, a lush woodland area, and a cutting garden of vegetables, tomatoes, and dahlias.

We are proud to announce that last year these funds benefitted the Cary Institute, Housatonic Valley Association, Innisfree Garden, Northeast Community Center, Audubon Sharon and Sharon Land Trust.

​The Millbrook Garden Club dedicates this show to the genius of Emily Dickinson as poet and gardener, as well as to all women who have found their voice in celebrating the beauty of their gardens and the natural world.

The purpose of a flower show is threefold: to set standards of artistic and horticultural excellence; to broaden knowledge of horticulture, floral design, conservation, photography and other related areas; and to share the beauty of a show with fellow club members and with the public.
